After the early night, I had a good lie in, only getting out of the tent when it started to get too hot in the Sun. It was time for brunch and since I hadn’t had breakfast last time I was here I decided to go the whole hog and go for the full English breakfast, with a Coke and a large pot of coffee. It took a while, but at least this time it actually arrived. Beans, fried eggs, grilled tomatoes and fried onions were all OK, bread for toast was the horrible sweet stuff. Sausages were OK and the streaky bacon was crispy and tasty. The pot of coffee was pretty weak but good for about 4 mugs of coffee. A solid 2.5 out of 5.

I woke up in my nice safari tent with no hangover thankfully. Some say that rafting is a great hangover cure, but it’s not something that I’ve ever wanted to try out. At about half eight, I and a few others got into a truck to go into Jinja to rendezvous with the rest of the rafters either staying at the hostel in Jinja or coming in from Kampala. This was supposed to be a sell out today, the main reason why my friend wasn’t joining me. He was told it was full up and so ended up doing the tandem kayaking the day before.

A couple of weeks after trip to Kenya it was about time that I made the most of what was left from my generous leaving gift and the half price offer at Nile River Explorers (NRE) if you go back within three months of first going. All that in mind I finished work a bit earlier than usual on Friday, got a boda downtown and then got into a pretty full matatu that was heading for Jinja. Thankfully since it was pretty full already it wasn't a long wait for it to fill up and I was soon on my way. An hour and a half or so later it was time to jump out of the matatu on the outskirts of Jinja and on to another boda for the long ride from there to the NRE camp at Bujagali. Finally after about two and a half hours after setting out I arrived at my home for the weekend.

As mentioned in the last post it was a pre-dawn start, but thankfully there were no shenanigans during the night. Refreshed by a nice warm shower (I was lucky enough to have warm showers every day of the trip, a rarity in itself) I went off to the restaurant and had sausages, eggs and toast. With some tomato ketchup it ended up as a sausage and egg buttie. Very similar to yesterday obviously, but tasted slightly better on toast than in a chapati. 2.5 out of 5. Fuelled and ready for more game viewing it was off in to the park again.

Masai Mara Safari Day 3 – Rhino Tourist Camp and Packed Lunch

Sorry again for the delay. Had a few bits and pieces to sort out most notably that I have now changed organisations and am now working at ANPPCAN doing some marcomms for the work that they do in the area of child rights and child protection. Good people doing good work, which I hope I can help them with over the next three months.

Masai Mara Safari Day 2 – Various places

An early start, but thankfully nowhere near as early as the previous day, we met up with Ali. I’d wisely decided to go into the bathroom last so I was at least able to muster some tepid water out of the shower head. All freshened up it was time to brave the mean streets of Nairobbery in search of some breakfast. Jill and I had made it about a couple of hundred yards when we bumped into to Timmy who was on his way to pick Kristin up from the bus terminal. The plan was to then come pick us up from the hotel before heading out of the city centre to pick up the final three members of our tour as they were living in Nairobi already.

Sorry it’s been a while. I fell off the back of a boda a little while back and buggered up, but didn’t break, my left wrist. Now that I can use it without too much pain again, I’ll start catching up on my food reviews. There are quite a few in the backlog. The first one back is a bit different as there isn’t a single restaurant or café involved.

What seems like ages ago now, I saw a post on Facebook of someone going to Masai Mara for a three day safari and if anyone was interested in joining her. The safari would be at the time of the great migration of wildebeest, zebra and other animals north from the Serengeti in Tanzania. There’s supposed to be well over a couple of million animals that make this annual northbound trip.
